'du Sabre's Trading Post'

Small shuttles come an go about once per night. They usually stay for days, or even weeks. Crews trade goods, some even legal. Rest up and make repairs out from under the watchful eye.

The crew of Glory have retrieved their ship, but it's been slow going getting her patched up and ready for hard flying in the black.

The smaller Witchbreak ship folk have helped out, making a run or two or three to the not far off city of Deja Thoris. A city with little to do with the Alliance, it's been peaceful as both crews rest, have gotten to know each other a little.

Two weeks and it's getting time to be moving on. Trade with others has been 'profitable'. Desired goods purchased, full larders even if not with the best of flavors; and crew members have considered their choices, and discuss them still.

And there's a confirmed rumor that Sonya and Tobias Hawke have been sighted on Athens (Sonya's home). Confirmed by a Sonya family member.

Glory had been repaired.

Or Mike had run out of beer, it was one or the other that meant they were now moving on from two weeks of.... well;

Becker had been very apologetic about the abandoning of the ship, characteristically picking every lump of guilt he could lay claim to, and placing the blame of her mishandling squarely on his own shoulders. Then he'd had Trina who, when he's found out had been injured, was strictly and without refute confined to bed rest... Unless of course she managed to flicker her charm at him. Mike had further saw to make sure the ship was safe, trading off regular lookout with others, including Cole who he was growing used to again. Becker had also made a point of making acquaintances around the post, specifically to keep tabs on if anyone was keeping tabs on them. Finally there was beer. When all was said and done, beer seemed to help before he tumbled into bed.

So there was that, but it was all drawing to a close. Mike had started the day with his usual round of asking if anyone was asking about them, and had returned to Glory. The crew was being pulled together for something that resembled a meeting about how they were moving forward. Breakfast seemed as good an excuse as any.

Someone else had to cook it of course, and luckily a local joint was putting on a spread. Becker just played maitre d. On shipwide comms, "Come and get it." And a few moments would pass until, "Breakfast that is. Food on a table, down at that bar we've be using. Got some talking to knock out" With a shake of his head, Mike was back down the ramp and moving towards said bar. He found it likely that he might bump into a Witchbreath member or two while he was down there.

The Cafe/Bar

Rose Renwick was there, the Captain of Witchbreath. She smiled, amused by Becker's constant vigilance. "no bodies askin' Becker." She called out in an amused voice, aware how often he'd been checking on Glory, or rather anyone looking for her... Glory that is.

There was a pot of coffee on the table, she had a cup she was working on. Renwick still looked worn out, she'd been suffering some jungle stomach rot and had not been in good humor for the last week.

It was already hot. A morning shower had stopped. If today was like the last 14 days, there would be another about midafternoon. Just on time to keep the humidity equal to the 100 F heat.

Rex Yangtree sat next to her. He was the hired bodyguard of some doctor that was on some kind of freelance contract to shuttle around and tend to the people that worked out in the jungle. Giant slow moving factory that harvested the jungle in quarter-mile wide strips. Rex travelled with him to make sure he didn't get permanently attatched to some factory or group of nomads.

Sylandra wandered into the bar, looking for the Captain. She still limped a bit, favoring her good leg. The "itinerant doctor" had done some work on the gun shot wound, and assured her that the damage wasn't permanent. It would still be a few days yet in recovery.

Rose sat with the doc's body guard, and the other guy, someone dealing with that other boat; Glory? Didn't sound like it was a good ride, but then she had had her share of dangerous ships. One more didn't make or break her. She pulled up a chair next to Rose and dropped into it.

"Witch is all sealed up, like y' asked. Everyone else is either here or settlin' accounts with the local banker. I put my share where I could keep an eye. 'Sus that no one is goin' anywhere right now. "

~~~~
Karyn stood at the bar, nursing the large bottle of vodka by pouring it one shot at a time into the small glass in her other hand. Her nerves had finally settled down, and with Glory finally gathered and being repaired, at least she still had a home and purpose.
She turned to press her back against the bar counter, looking over the ratty bunch at their various positions around the room. Becker was fussing as usual. No word from Ian for sometime, and with Sonya gone missing, and that monstrosity mad man as well...
Some things work themselves out. Couldn't deal with that walking ton-ton.
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free I've got nothing but affection for all those who sailed with me
Stick with me baby, stick with me anyhow. Things should start to get interestin' right about now
Ian had been torn several ways to Sunday. First, Sonya gets taken and he has Ian Jr. He really didn't know what to do. He was a spacer, through and through. Should he make his son one too?
He many not have a choice.
Once Sonya was taken and Karyn had blasted them into the Black, Ian made sure they returned on a stealth trejectory back near the ship and villiage, after making sure the other ships had left.
He also made sure that Abe was taken care of and had a place to rest. Back on the Glory, in her old room.
Now, two weeks later, he still didn't know what to do about his son and the ship was ready to go.
He looked out.
He made his decision.
Unless some power in the 'Verse arrived, Ian and Son would be flyin together.
He left his son sleeping in his cabin and made his way to the bar for some coffee.
The once-quiet and peaceful atmosphere of the cafe was suddenly shook-up by what sounded like a loud *THUMP* coming from the washroom. A minute after the sudden noise the door to the washroom opened and revealed a very sweaty and noticeably shaken Dr. Li, breathing heavily and taking a moment to gaze at the various patrons in the establishment. How horribly embarrassing.
"E-everything's fine," the doctor mumbled under his breath, possibly trying to convince himself of that rather than anyone else in the cafe. "Damn," he muttered again. 15 years dealing with his illness and progress had been marginal at best, but maybe he could be the one to finally cure it. Wouldn't that be something!
After padding down his throbbing, sweat-covered forehead with a handkerchief from his doctor's bag (blood-stained, naturally) Li made his way back to his table, trying his best to regain his composure. "Sorry that took long. Minor accident. Nothing to worry about." He spoke very quickly in order to move on from the incident and change the subject.
Li poured himself a cup of coffee before reaching inside of his bag once again, pulling out a brightly-colored flower that he had found in the jungle earlier that day and looking at it intently. "Interesting find. Blood clotting and anti-inflammatory properties. Could've used while treating you," he explained to Sylandra while staring towards the bar, taking an obnoxiously-loud sip of his coffee. behind his dark-tinted glasses he began coldly staring at his hired bodyguard from the corner of his eye. Li didn't care too much for Rex (he felt that way about most unlearned people), although he'd never express his discontent openly. But the bodyguard had been doing his job well and, as far as the doctor was concerned, that's all that really mattered in the end. Li shifted his gaze to Rose and, accidentally making eye-contact with the woman, immediately turned his head away from her to find something else in the bar to occupy his attention. He never did do too well with the whole eye-contact and conversation thing with most people, especially if they happened to be a physically-attractive female. Hopefully neither of the women would notice his odd mannerisms or, God help him, try striking up a conversation that didn't involve his medical expertise.
Rex Yangree moved to the side, back against a wall; an eye on the door, his 'client', and on a datapaper (which if anyone noticed was Thucydides 'History of the Peloponnesian War', in Greek).
"Captain." said Rose, nodding to her counterpart. Both their ships had been here for about the same two weeks. Both definately lying low. Some of the crews had taken to other ventures so it was about time they be going as well. A loose lip could send someone looking for them.
Of course the crew of Witchbreath figured out it as Glory. Not some ship named Glory.
the 'GLORY'
"So," Rose said for all to hear. "Got our stash, but got a job. Six figure type, cash money. It's local, bash and grab. Data dump. Would make anyone a lot of enemies. Two ships might make it work. One to do the grab, the second to retreat to for a quiet go away."
It was big money. Glory was cash poor now that they had completed repairs.
And Rose Renwick, by all cortex sources was a reliable criminal heist boss.
Rose had made it clear to Sylandra that she wanted to do this last job for Lucian Hollow. It was all the money she Rose would ever need. Then retire... to someplace... where she had someone waiting. All the getting even with the Alliance, all the payback. She was tired of it. Time to go home, well... as she had explained to Syl. Time to make one.
Ian sat down at the table and nodded to those all around. His gaze lingered on Yangtree to longest, he still felt that he had met the man.
Maybe in another life, he thought once again.
He listened to what Rose had to say and noddd again.
"It sounds good. We could use the credits and we owe you for all the help you've given. How would you divy up the workload?"
Even as he spoke, his mind was on Ian. He did not want to take his son into a war zone, just yet.
Maybe in a million years or so.
"All right," said Rose Renwick. "but just to be sure, you need to know that we work for a third party. Someone between the Alliance and the Independents. This information we are to delete is valuable to them both. It's links and lists of dozens of terrorist and other underground organizations looking to disrupt the United Planets."
"If the Alliance gets it, it means they'd be hunted down killed or captured. Right now the underground has it, but they're working to break it down and do confirmations. Right here. On Greenleaf."
This was incredible intell. And Rose... pressed, revealed how she knew. "We captured one of the underground agents. Some called herself Ryobi. She and our doctor interrogated her, I didn't tell you before. Our methods.... Anyway, she talked. We've got a way in. We'll need a techie, someone to dump a virus into their systems, then leave the place in a pile of rubble. Make a getaway, dump Witchbreath, and slip away unnoticed in Glory."
"This Ryobi, I'll be dealing with her. She's a killer, friends of mine. After one more round of interrogation... this.... her real name; you may have heard it. Bosch. She dies."
Rose Renwick was ice cold. Her eyes started at Ian Dugan's. She wanted to make sure he, the legend, was the man for this. Real crime, cold efficiency. There were rumors they had hearts these people of Glory. Did ice run in their veins? or were they soft, warm blooded?
Mike gave a nod of acknowledgement to Renwick conceding a smile along with it. He was well aware that his actions were most likely noticed during their stay, and gave an impression of who he was. Paranoid? Overprotective? The list went on and the answer was likely to be all of the above.
Becker took to pouring coffee as a wise opener to the day. Even though he disliked coffee, he'd got into the habit of usuing it to push him through the day. Plus it made the good drinks taste so much better. He left a mug warming his hands as he let it cool down before it was to approach his throat.
A deep breath was taken and released as Becker listened to Dugan being pitched future plans. "An easy gig right? One to knock out the park before we get back to what matters." Becker was focused on loose ends and the tying up of such things, but there was a need for credits.
Ian's eyebrow lifted.
That was a name that he had not heard in years.
She had left on good terms. First as part of the Mei-Li, then away from there and into the Black, back on her own, he supposed. But...
She was crew.
She was family.
Nobody messes with his family.
"No."
He spoke without looking at anyone, but those who knew a killer in his own right would be able to tell that there was steel forming in the air. Electricity seemed to crackle from Ian's eyes as he finally looked at Rose.
"She's crew. She's family. She dies at your hands, you die at mine."
Ian was utterly still; utterly calm; utterly deadly.
Hidden behind the safety of dark lenses, beady eyes were busy darting this way and that trying to eavesdrop on numerous conversations. After doing a double and then a triple-take, he realized that his "unlearned friend" Rex was reading a book about history... In Greek? How quaint and amusing. It seems he had made the mistake of writing off the merc as a generic hired brute.
There was talk going around the group, something about a job and money and illegal activities. Li didn't care too much, he was busy enjoying his coffee, checking out some ladies, and trying to solve this Sudoku puzzle in his head that had been giving him some trouble earlier.
As the hairs on the heavily perspiring doctor's neck stood up on their ends, Li did his absolute best to try and seem calm and collected in front of his new compatriots (he did quite an awful job despite his desperation). As his shaky hand grabbed his coffee cup to get a refill, the cold and intimidating voice of Mr. Dugan sent painful shivers down his spinal cord.
At the worst possible time the doctor had managed to swallow a good bit of hot coffee down the wrong pipe and causing a mean fit of pulmonary aspiration. He began coughing madly, holding his hands up apologetically to the group while gasping for oxygen. "S-so sorry..." How nauseatingly embarrassing. "Sah gwa," he moaned pathetically. His fleeting hopes of making a decent first impression on these new people were pitifully obliterated.
Renwick raised an eyebrow.
Her attention turned to Dr. Li while he had his fit. Rose looked to his supposed bodyguard, who seemed to have only mild interest in his boss's medical condition. He put down his data disk and turned it off. Waited until his assignment composed himself. everyone seemed to. And then after his apology, everyone turned back to business, as though nothing had happened.
"I had no idea she was one of yours. She was an assassin, killed.... " That didn't seem to matter to Ian Dugan.
"I consider myself duly warned." She slid a data disk partway to Dugan. "Are we going to be able to work this job. I am in need of the data skills of Glory. And after, we can discuss Bosch. Until then I'll keep her on Witchbreath."
Sylandra listened intently to Rose' disclosure of the job, as well as the other men commenting on it. Something tickled the hair on the back of her neck. Something that didn't quite sit right in her stomach.
"So, this info. Somethin' that can hurt the Independents if Purplebellies get it, and yet, if we destroy it, then it can lead to worse gose for Browncoats as well? I dunno, Rose. Seems kind'a 'gainst what we were doin' b'fore. " She rubbed an itch just under her belt on her left hip. Then her eyes caught the other woman, leaning against the bar. The bearing; that look of gorram confidence. Only one kind of military training would bring that out. She flicked her chin at the woman while addressing the others.
"Speakin' Alliance, what's she got t' do with us?"
Karyn was caught off guard a bit by the accusation. The tramp pilot, at least that's what she assumed the woman was, calling her out like that. She stared directly into her eyes, trying to determine the limits that were going to be allowed for.
"EX Alliance, if you don't mind. Lost my ship and commission, saving most of these people. Don't think for a moment that my allegiances are any concern of yours. "
She turned back toward Rose. "I am concerned, however, about this third party. Are they looking to start a new War, and if so, what is their involvement? "
From Ian
"No. ... She's crew. She's family. She dies at your hands, you die at mine."
The doctor chocked on his coffee.
It wasn't that bad, thought Ian
From The Doc
"S-so sorry... Sah gwa,"
Ian really didn't pay him much mind.
"I had no idea she was one of yours. She was an assassin, killed.... " That didn't seem to matter to Ian Dugan.
from Rose
"I consider myself duly warned. ... Are we going to be able to work this job. I am in need of the data skills of Glory. And after, we can discuss Bosch. Until then I'll keep her on Witchbreath."
Rose slid a data chip part way across the table.
Ian was about to answer but was interrupted
from Sylandra
"So, this info. Somethin' that can hurt the Independents if Purplebellies get it, and yet, if we destroy it, then it can lead to worse gose for Browncoats as well? I dunno, Rose. Seems kind'a 'gainst what we were doin' b'fore. ... Speakin' Alliance, what's she got t' do with us?"
THe woman had rubbed the back of her neck once before Karyn spoke up
from Karyn
"EX Alliance, if you don't mind. Lost my ship and commission, saving most of these people. Don't think for a moment that my allegiances are any concern of yours. "
Then she turned to Rose and continued
From Karyn
"I am concerned, however, about this third party. Are they looking to start a new War, and if so, what is their involvement? "
Finally Ian answered. He addressed Karyn's situation first.
"She's crew. That is all you need to know."
He had not looked away from Rose, but was aware of everybody in the bar at that moment.
"As to Bosch ... She'll be comin with us while we deal with this job. Even if we dont do this job, Bosch still comes with us."
He paused and continued
"Not that I dont trust ya, its just that I dont trust ya."
He knew what Bosch was and what she had done before. He was not heartless.
"I'm sorry for your loss, but she will not be receiving any more of your tender mercies."
He leaned forward and picked up the chip.
Dear God it was hot... Abe had slipped off the ship early and had gone on a fact finding mission. She was looking for who would be going off world or who might be looking for a new hire. She didn't know what she was going to do yet, but it helped to keep things open. She was sure she was welcome on Glory, but she wasn't sure if that was a good idea yet. Her and Ian in close quarters again? She didn't think she wanted to go there again. She didn't know why she was wondering that either. It's not like to happen anyway, especially given what happened last time.
She was hungry, so she slipped into the bar to get some grub. She absently tugged at her half sweat soaked t-shirt trying to get some relief from the heat. She saw a couple of others from the ship and they were most definitely in a meeting. So she got some food and headed to a table near the back. Far enough away that she couldn't hear them, yet close enough that she could keep an eye on the crew of Glory.
Things seemed to be going OK until she saw Ian's attitude go frosty. He just heard something he didn't like. Whether or not that dislike was going to erupt in violence was another thing. But she suddenly found herself with her hand on her gun under the table which she slowly took bites with her other hand. The slowness was not a design of her style of surveillance, it was because moving the arm attached to the shoulder where she got shot was still painful. She was going to need to do some rehab to it most probably. So she needed to make sure wherever she ended up that they had some kind of workout equipment available. Either that or she would have to improvise with canned food or something.
Another thing she noticed was that the one woman who was at the table with Ian kept rubbing on a place near her beltline as she addressed the Glory crewmember named Karyn. Was that because the woman had some kind of irritation or because she was dangerously close to a weapon. Abe's eyes narrowed as she decided that she would continue to watch. After all, she owed Ian for more than one thing. Watching his back was not a stretch for her.
Rose Renwick ignored Ian for the moment, it seemed her only ally at the 'negotiation' was now challenging her. She showed no indication that she minded, but it was pretty obvious Rose of Witchbreath sat alone,
"Third party is looking for the status quo. Data we're looking to delete contains a large number of underground organizations. The recently deceased Senator Seliator had been gathering the information, though why he never shared it with the Parliament I have no idea. I don't follow politics."
"Independents want it so they can find each other and start another war, more of a guerilla style campaign. Not good for business. Third party.... " Renwick opened her purse, so that Dugan could see in. A pretty stack of credits was inside. She slid out four stacks. "... want to keep things as they are. Slowly getting better, without a war, without the Alliance wiping out any and all resistance."
The money was forty thousand credits in four stacks. Plenty to get Glory much more properly repaired, spares stored, fueled and reserves.
So then she turned to Ian. "This is your share, up front. You want Bosch now, you get half now. The other half only if we're successful." She slowly raked two of the stacks back.
"I do a job. I get paid. Anyone have sentimental reasons, or political agendas... don't belong in this line of work."
Renwick lit a cigarette and slowly took a soft drag off of it. She showed no sign of being in a very weak position, surrounded by Glory crew.
Ian smiled
"Damn woman. Are you married?"
He let the question hang but he was astounded at Rose. She did not flinch once. Her cred with him rose back up to where it was before she said that she had hurt Bosch.
He scupped the credits up.
"You have a deal."
Rose just muttered "Mm." when Ian mentioned being married, then "done." when he agreed to the deal. She put the other half of the money back in her purse, spit in her hand and offered it to Ian.
Then, "I'll go fetch your girl." And headed out of the cafe, an eye moved to Abe as she left, an eyebrow raised as she passed through the door. She stopped and turned back to look at Ian Dugan. "you want to go over the details on Witchbreath." Where they were going, exactly how it would all work; that had been left out of the more public discussion.
Rose looked from Karyn to Abe. "Bring the rest of you women."
Then again turned to walk away. "I've got scotch."
========
Ian Gulliver was wild.
Or so he would have been considered in any core world community. Raised in a village of a hundred he was a product of that environment. Bold for a lad of five years, able to slip into the junglewood without fear. But with the educated caution that one needs to not die; which means knowing how close to stay.
And now he was going to be a spacer. Mama had left. Again. He didn't quite understand that, she had said she'd be coming back to stay longer this last time. But daddy was here now. He was a Captain. That meant a lot, stories told to him by his mother had Captain of the Glory as some sort of heroic figure fighting the dark forces of the verse. Monsters and pirates; Alliance bullies and criminal masterminds.
He couldn't sleep, instead he explored Glory. Carefully, with the caution learned by early steps in the dark hollows of Greenleaf.
ON WITCHBREATH.
Ryobi was still drugged. Bruises from a nasty fight some two weeks ago still showed. He eyes were glazed like she was trying to wake up from a very deep sleep, but just could not do it.
"She's still under the influence, take a few more hours to get her head straight." said Rose
Only the cargo area and lounge/kitchen area was opened to visitors.
Rose sat at the table in the lounge, a map of a nearby city spread out.
As Rose stood to leave, Sylandra did as well. Following her captain out the door, pausing as she stopped at the door and looked back at the Ex-Alliance pilot as well, a dark crimson glow rose from Syl's neckline and colored her cheeks. Her eyes almost glowed with dark energy as they sought to bore holes into the other woman. Then she turned on Rose' lead and exited the cafe.
As she had stopped, Abe got a better look at that spot on Syl's hip; some colored ink peeked over the edge of her waistband. A tattoo of something on the woman's left hip. Too small a glance to see it in total.
